Holmes County authorities investigate deadly roadside shooting

BONIFAY, Fla. (WMBB) — Holmes County authorities are in the middle of investigating a car accident that turned into a shooting.

Holmes County Sheriff John Tate said the accident occurred around 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

“Two individuals were traveling northbound on 173. It appears that they fell asleep, lost control of the vehicle, and flipped at the corner,” Tate said.

Tate said the men traveling southbound pulled up to check on them. One of the men involved in the crash was ejected from the car. He allegedly shot and killed the man who was trying to help. His motive is still unknown at this time.

“It’s a weird situation, a wreck turns into a shooting. That doesn’t happen every day. It’s usually pretty cut and dry. It’s a big puzzle piece. Pieces of the puzzle need to come together and it’s going to take some time,” Tate said.

One of the men involved in the car accident is in custody for an outstanding warrant in Calhoun County for aggravated battery. Both men were transported to Southeast Medical Hospital in Dothan with minor injuries. Tate said he doesnt believe the men knew the samaritan.

“We do not believe they have any connection. We have not been able to connect any dots to them at this time. That doesn’t mean that won’t change in the near future, but we don’t believe they knew each other,” Tate said.

Tate said they have minimal information about the incident, but they’ll have more updates as they analyze evidence.

“The crime lab responded and collected a bunch of evidence, stuff that will be analyzed for DNA evidence. Also, we’ll rely on our medical examiner’s office to give us some answers as far as the autopsy goes,” Tate said.

Tate asks anyone with information on the shooting to call the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office.
