Lake DeFuniak West Pier closing for repairs

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. (WMBB) — The City of DeFuniak Springs announced the closure of the West Pier at Lake DeFuniak on Wednesday.

The closure will begin on April 4 and will last for one month.

The release said, “This is due to some much-needed construction and upgrades that will be carried out by the City’s Public Works Maintenance Department.”

Mayor Bob Campbell told News 13 that the city replaced the East pier a few years back. Both piers needed repairs after being submerged in water between 2011-2016.

“When you look at it today, you think, how could that be? But it was it was underwater and it took a real toll on the dock. And we upgraded the east dock but we never got around to the west dock, so it was time,” Campbell said.

Campbell said everything except the piling will be replaced on the bridge.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we assure you that these upgrades will make the pier even better and more enjoyable for everyone,” the release said.

The city hopes to have the repairs done and reopen the pier before the Lake Fest event on May 18.
