Logistics Center to bring in new business, jobs to Walton County

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. (WMBB) — Walton County is looking at bringing in more private sector businesses.

A new $50 million Emerald Coast Logistics Center is underway at the Mossy Head industrial park.

The 34-acre site will host five warehouse-style buildings totaling more than 500,000 square feet.

The builders, Leaf River Group said the site can host a number of different industries.

“We believe Emerald Coast Logistics Center is uniquely situated to serve the growing warehouse and distribution needs in a variety of sectors, including construction and building supplies, food and beverage services, third-party logistics, last mile distributors, and the aerospace and avionics industries,” Stewart Speed, Leaf River Group said.

Speed projects the site to bring in more than 200 jobs.

Cities around like DeFuniak Springs and Crestview welcome the economic booster.

“It’s just going to do a lot for this whole park, for this whole county, for this whole area way beyond the county. The things these guys with the logistics are doing is going to cover several different products, services. It’s going to be a big deal,” Bob Campbell, DeFuniak Springs Mayor said.

In a tourism-heavy economy, Walton County says bringing in the logistics center and developing new businesses will help keep the county resilient in the long run.

“We have to have a diverse economy. If we stay strictly with tourist and a [Hurricane] Michael hits Walton County, we’re out of business for several, several years. So we want you people to come. We’re happy you came here. We hope you do more in Walton County,” Tony Anderson, district 5 commissioner said.
